The brief controversy last week over Donald Trump allegedly not understanding that Kamala Harris could be black and Indian American at the same time gave new fuel to the Democratic Party’s claim that it is the party of anti-racism. It not only understands biracialism, it also chose as its presidential nominees Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, both of whom are half-black and thus biracial. Democratic leaders support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) measures to address historic and structural racial discrimination against minorities. And significantly more black Americans are registered as Democrats than as Republicans.
And yet Democrats have increasingly embraced racialist policies and measures in recent years. In 2020, President Joe Biden announced he would only select a black woman as his vice president, and Harris’ presidential campaign has segregated its volunteers by race. Many DEI measures are openly racist in giving preferential treatment to people based on the color of their skin rather than any measure of their relative disadvantage. As for greater black support for Democrats, it does not necessarily stem from the party being any less racist.
