Netflix released a documentary called “Apocalypse in the Tropics” about Brazil. It portrays Lula and de Moraes as defenders of democracy against the villain Bolsonaro. Who is funding this propaganda? https://yuribezmenov.substack.com/p/brazil-apocalypse-in-the-tropics-propaganda

Gosh, it is so good to know we in the US would never see this sort of thing - an evil, authoritarian government imprisoning (even killing) political opponents….

Oh wait…. Jan 6, Jan 8….

Isn’t it odd that the same tactics and overall playbook seem to have been adopted by a number of world regimes at around the same time? It would be enlightening to determine if there was some kind of coordination involved.

Monkey see, monkey do. Political types aren't that creative. They have to hire consultants for basic guidance on what normals like.

My thoughts exactly! I have to wonder if any exchanges between our DOJ, etal were found. During the lead up & beyond who from US government traveled to Brazil? This could of easily been DJT heading to jail for 27 years. All of Brazil is now under wraps. The long harsh sentences given to protesters and social media contributors puts a freeze on any kind of political discourse.

We barely dodged the same bullschitt happening here. Lula, that phony Judge, and all of their lackeys are the real, and violent, coup.

Brazil and the Lula Government, in particular, is corrupt. Good for President Trump; Brazil's economy relies on the US, and it deserves punishment and reform.

Of what corruption are all the other tariffed countries guilty? Trump and secretary of commerce Howard Lutnick become visibly aroused when talking about billions flowing into their coffers. The beauty part: The money from American importers flows in even during negotiations.

If you had any history or knowledge of trade, you would know the real problem isn't tariffs, but non-tariff barriers. Most of our trading partners are hugely guilty of them. Brazil refuses or restricts a great many US commodities and finished products. You can look it up. Let's get you started: https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/brazil-trade-barriers

If you had any knowledge of Trump, you would know that he likes money and couldn't care less about your deep and haughty expertise on barriers to American imports, about which he says nothing. There's no money in that. I'll get you started with the writings of Trump's advisor, Peter Navarro, to understand the cover grift: trade imbalance equals unfair trade, so slap on tariffs and watch American factories pop up like mushrooms (making tariff billions in the meantime). Trump also cares about Bolsonaro, he says.

ND, not sure why you haven’t heard that most of the asymmetrical tariffs imposed by Trump are due to non-tariff barriers. Your comment about political issues affecting Trump tariff levels is also mistaken. He is clearly imposing higher tariff rates on countries he does not approve of. I am sure this will eventually result in a “result”, but no clue whether good or bad for us here.

You have much more respect for Trump's mind and integrity than I do. It might be a good idea to look up comments by him and his entourage about tariffs bringing jobs back to America and compare those to the excitement about raising cash.

You state this as if it’s a bad outcome. I too am a fan of Balsonaro the nationalist capitalist, and not so of Lula the communist. I have CDS (communist derangement syndrome).

Exciting new ideas to give all branches of the U.S. government the power to combat political opponents and jail dissidents. Semantics matter. Call a demonstration a "coup," kind of like January 6. Wait! Is Brazil copying off our answers?

Decades ago I worked with a union leader who was personally close to Lula. This was in the late 90's before he was elected President for the first time. At that point, he had a good reputation as a union leader and, at least early on, was not a terrible president. However, that was a long time ago. Clearly, now he is one of the poster children for the aphorism that says power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Everything about Lula's last campaign and his current presidency is rotten to the core from corruption.

WHY? Why are leaders of western nations consciously destroying the stability of their societies in so many ways? Is it because they believe there is no way forward for democracies and their middle classes? And because they want to be on the powerful side of a society of haves and have nots with no stable middle? Why else? Are there any other theories about why?

This is a reasonable question. Perhaps they have a view of government which is incompatible with the chaos that is usually a part of a genuinely democratic process. Perhaps they want to "get things done," things that to them are more important than a process that lets many people express their ideas. The US government was designed to be slow and full of conflict, and this tends to minimize how far things can go off the rails at any one time. It also makes it very difficult to make big changes, and these people may truly believe that big changes are needed.
