President Donald Trump has only himself to blame for nearly getting killed on Saturday, say many in the news media.
Explained Lydia Polgreen of the New York Times, “We would do well to remember that the language of apocalyptic violence has been Trump’s signature throughout his career, long before he descended that golden escalator to declare that rapists from Mexico were invading our country.”
Said ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “President Trump and his supporters have contributed to this violent rhetoric.”
And, emphasized David Frum in The Atlantic, “Fascism feasts on violence. In the years since his own supporters attacked the Capitol to overturn the 2020 election—many of them threatening harm to Speaker Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence—Trump has championed the invaders, would-be kidnappers, and would-be murderers as martyrs and hostages…. Now the bloodshed that Trump has done so much to incite against others has touched him as well.”
